An image showing the back of Pope Francis.

“The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) joins Catholics around the world in mourning the loss of Pope Francis, a humble servant of God and faithful disciple who returned to the Father on Easter Monday—a sacred day of renewal and resurrection in our faith. His passing on such a holy day holds deep spiritual meaning and speaks to the lasting hope he brought to so many.

Pope Francis devoted his life to serving others with courage, compassion, and love—especially the poor and marginalized. As we journey through the Jubilee Year in our schools—a year he called “Hope for the World”—we are reminded of his call to build a more just, merciful, and united world. His 2022 visit to Canada, where he offered a heartfelt apology to Indigenous communities, remains a powerful moment of reconciliation and healing that touched hearts across the country.

Flags at all TCDSB schools will be lowered to half-mast. In the days ahead, students will have the opportunity to reflect on his life and legacy through prayer and classroom learning, grounded in our Catholic faith and the values Pope Francis so beautifully embodied: compassion, service, and justice.”
