Artificial Intelligence (AI) Guidelines
What is Generative AI (Gen AI)?
The transformative potential of Gen AI includes:
Generate new content based on trained data.
Automate tasks.
Propose new and innovative solutions to complex problems.
The benefits of Gen AI for educators and students include:
Help develop creative lesson plans.
Produce educational content tailored to individual learning styles.
Prepare students and staff to adapt to the age of AI.
Responsible Use of Gen AI
It's important to recognize that while Gen AI offers numerous benefits, it also comes with significant responsibilities. We must all commit to ensuring that its use aligns with our Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP), with a focus on Learning, Equity, and Well-Being by respecting the privacy and security of all individuals involved.
As we incorporate Gen AI into the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), our focus will be on:
Enhancing the educational journey for our students.
Improving the efficiency of our corporate operations.
Maintaining ethical practices and ensuring inclusivity.
Ethical Use of Gen AI
In order to be ethical users of Gen AI, we must adhere to the following ethical guidelines when utilizing AI tools in an educational environment:
As with the creation of any content, creators must be accountable for any content that was produced and distributed, including those created using Gen AI.
Privacy, Security and Safety
One of the key factors that influences the choice of Gen AI tools is the privacy and security of our data. While there are many Gen AI tools available, they may not guarantee the protection of the data that is used to train and generate content.
This means that our sensitive information could be exposed or misused by third parties without consent or knowledge of the organization or individuals (such data may include and is not limited to personal, corporate, academic, professional or financial information). Gen AI tools selected for use must first be reviewed to ensure sensitive information is properly protected. Once vetted for privacy and security, the Board-approved Gen AI products can be used with the assurance that TCDSB data is encrypted, anonymized and stored safely.
Keep in mind that staff or student use may have different factors involved that could result in different lists of approved tools and protocols for each group.
