The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a specialized program that allows students to gain credits toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and focus their learning on a specific economic sector at the same time. The SHSM is a Ministry of Education approved program.
Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts offers the Arts and Culture SHSM. This allows students to gain a deeper understanding and experience the arts within their art specialty, within other arts areas, and in ways outside the scope of the four arts areas at Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts. This enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills.
Students receive the SHSM seal on their diploma when they:
Complete a specific bundle of 8 courses in Arts and Culture.
Earn industry certifications like first aid, 3D printing, anti-oppression and allyship training, game design, interactive arts, and more.
Gain important skills on the job through cooperative education placements.
Students declare interest in completing the Arts and Culture SHSM through an application at the end of Grade 10, which can be found in our Guidance Office.
Students are encouraged to review the following resources:
