The primary aims of the English curriculum at Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts are the consolidation and development of competent writing skills, and the fostering of a lifelong appreciation of language and literature. Literature provides the window into the history of human experience and imagination; language provides the means to interpret and articulate students’ own ideas, and those of others.
Throughout all English courses, the art of oral and written communication will be emphasized; skill acquisition from grades 7 through 12 will occur on a logical and challenging continuum. Opportunities for creative expression and specific literary projects will be provided at all levels.
Beyond the goal to instill in students a love of reading and an appreciation of good literature, is the desire to generate within them a positive self-profile, sensitivity to others and a deeper understanding of Christian principles and Catholic doctrine as they relate to the literary themes studied. Every year students are invited to participate in a full day excursion to experience a live production at The Stratford Festival.
