On April 25, students from Loretto College School, along with participants from four other TCDSB schools, took part in the Global Ideas Institute’s Final Symposium at the University of Toronto. This year’s challenge focused on addressing the Digital Divide.
Loretto College students concentrated their research on Northeastern Brazil, particularly the cities of Salvador and São Luís, identifying critical infrastructure needs at the state and community levels. Their project aimed not only to provide technology to individuals but also to ensure equitable access, helping bridge gaps in education, social connection, healthcare, and career opportunities.
In response to these challenges, the students developed Tech4Ward, a company designed to coordinate various services and providers to connect citizens. Their proposal included partnerships with the Toronto Public Library, Fundação Biblioteca Nacional, and TELUSWise to supply refurbished laptops, charging lockers, expanded 3G internet access, and digital literacy education for underserved communities.
It was truly inspiring to see Loretto College students offering innovative, real-world solutions to global issues.
