Science and Technology

At Loretto College School, science is an interactive and inspiring journey where curiosity leads and discovery thrives. Our comprehensive Science program offers hands-on learning in biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science, with engaging projects and real-world applications designed to spark a lifelong love of learning.

From the Grade 9 de-streamed course onward, students explore scientific concepts through experimentation, research, and the engineering design process. They examine the connections between science, technology, society, and the environment, developing essential skills that extend beyond the classroom. Dissections of specimens such as frogs, pigs, and sheep brains give students a unique, tactile understanding of biology, while chemistry and physics courses include lab investigations, simulations, and webinars that deepen conceptual knowledge.

Our passionate teachers offer both expertise and encouragement, supporting students as they take intellectual risks, ask meaningful questions, and grow as critical thinkers. The program is further enriched by partnerships with the University of Toronto, Toronto Metropolitan University’s Engineering Outreach Program, Western University, and the Ontario Science Centre, giving students access to extended learning opportunities.

At Loretto College, our Technology and Health Care programs empower students to explore innovation, creativity, and real-world problem-solving. Rooted in the philosophy that students learn best by doing, these programs offer hands-on experiences that prepare them for future success in school, work and life.

Our Robotics Club offers an exciting opportunity for students to apply their science and engineering skills in a collaborative and creative environment. Senior Physics students often take part in the club, using their knowledge of motion, forces, circuits, and programming to build functioning robots. Students work together through the engineering design cycle, developing both technical expertise and teamwork skills. Robotics is truly a place where teamwork and innovation come together!

The fundamental purpose of the technological education program is to provide students with knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will enhance their ability to achieve success in secondary school, the workplace, postsecondary education or training, and daily life. The philosophy that underlies broad-based technological education is that students learn best by doing. The Communications Technology courses are designed to provide students with the communications skills necessary for any future career, as well as skills and knowledge to work in key areas such as graphic design, animation, digital video production, and interactive web-based design. Emphasis is placed on the design process, design principles, planning techniques and tools, as well as the creative skills necessary for creating effective communications projects.

Our Health Care Technology program is vibrant and experiential. The goal is to provide students wishing to pursue a career path in healthcare with a solid background for future studies. Students can interact in an authentic learning environment in our very own, one-of-a-kind healthcare clinic. The Health Care Curriculum adopts an activity-based, project-driven approach that involves students in problem solving as they develop knowledge and skills and gain experience in the healthcare field. This course enables students to develop their understanding of basic health care procedures, including the safe use of appropriate instruments, equipment, and materials. Students will focus on health care fundamentals, including the anatomical features and physiology of the major body systems and the factors that affect homeostasis in the human body. Students will develop an awareness of health and safety issues in the healthcare field, analyse environmental and societal issues related to health care, and learn about professional practice standards and career opportunities in the field.

Students may also pursue focused learning through courses in Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or the SHSM Health & Wellness pathway in Grade 11 and 12. Whether students are future scientists, health professionals, or simply curious learners, our Science and Technology program helps them explore the world with confidence, creativity, and care.
