In a transformative day, the Grade 12 students of Loretto College School had the opportunity to undertake a "Gospel Peacemaking Retreat" with the Community Peacemaking Team (CPT) at the Mary Ward Centre (grounded in the Franciscan tradition). It was a day dedicated to exploring themes of peace, nonviolence, and moral courage through a faith-based lens.
The day began with Father Bob's photo essay and personal witness of the situation faced by Palestinian children trying to get through IDF checkpoints at their schools. Through this, students were introduced to the principles of active peacemaking. The day included conversations about privilege, bias, judgment and perception, and workshops on de-escalating verbal violence and bystander intervention. Finally, in small groups, they were assigned peacemakers who embodied Luke's gospel, prepared a presentation, and shared their insights about taking action for justice and peace in their communities.
Throughout the retreat, our Loretto College students exuded confidence, articulation, and a willingness to engage in difficult conversations respectfully.
