On May 9, 2024, the Trust 15 organization facilitated a dynamic educational field trip to Queen's Park with Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School and Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School student leaders. With high anticipation, students began their day with a sit-in at the Ontario Legislature. They witnessed debates between the Progressive Conservative (PC) members of provincial Parliament (MPP)s and their opposition on topics ranging from the housing crisis, banning cell phones in Ontario schools, the Federal Carbon Tax, and more. The students were engaged and eager to ask questions about the function of this branch of government.
Superintendent Richard Walo, Trust 15 chief executive officer (CEO) Marcia Brown, teachers, and students met with the Hon. Doug Ford and Minister Stephen Lecce for a "student question period" where they learned about the role of the provincial government and could ask questions about issues raised during the Legislative Assembly. The students also met two MPPs, Ms. Patrice Barnes and Ms. Charmaine Williams, and had the opportunity to take a personalized photo with them and Premier Ford in his office. Mr. Ford and Mr. Lecce encouraged students to work hard and find their passion, whether in the arts, skilled trades, business, science, or technology, in order to live a productive life.
The day culminated with an educational tour of Queen's Park, during which students learned about the history and functions of the Ontario legislature. They were inspired by the stories of some notable figures such as Mr. Lincoln Alexander, Ms. Zanana Akande, Mr. Alvin Curling, and more.
Overall, this trip engaged students and increased their critical awareness of the Canadian political landscape and its impact on shaping their future. A big thank you to Mrs. Marcia Brown and the Area MPP for Etobicoke North, the Hon. Doug Ford, for making this possible for our students.
