On April 5, 2024, Monsignor Percy Johnson hosted the “FLAME” social justice fashion show. The show featured over 50 models, including students and staff, who strutted down the runway inspired by themes of love, resilience, acceptance, light, and cultural heritage. This unique event was a visual representation of the beauty and diversity in our community. Show producers used an equity framework that gave students from diverse backgrounds opportunities to work collaboratively and creatively while also developing leadership, marketing, and planning skills.
FLAME symbolizes love, inclusion, faith, and community. It transcends the traditional fashion show as it aims to affirm student models in their intersecting identities in a safe and nurturing environment. Furthermore, students raised their self-awareness about their inner light and were encouraged to shine brightly and positively within our school and the Rexdale community.
By challenging prevailing notions of beauty standards, FLAME became a platform that empowers models to cultivate self-confidence, joy, self-esteem, self-love, and a positive body image. FLAME is all about resisting beauty norms and fostering resilience while embodying our school motto, “Heart Speaks to Heart.”
The FLAME show was a sold-out and highly impactful event. We were honored to have our Area Superintendent - Mr. Richard Walo, Superintendent of Equity, Indigenous Education and Community Relations - Roy Fernandez, Area Community Relations Officer - Olivia Campbell, Catholic Student Leadership - Michael Consul, and our TSU President, first and second Vice Presidents in attendance. We raised over $3,000. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to organizations that support marginalized youth within our school and the wider Rexdale community.
