At Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School, students are turning Lent into a season of compassion, service, and community building.

Spearheaded by Ms. Linda Izzo and the school’s Peer Ministry program, a dedicated group of students known as the “Blue Crew” have launched the “Find the Kind!” and “Be Kind” initiatives — a series of activities aimed at spreading kindness and positivity throughout the school.

The initiative is part of a broader effort across the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) to encourage reflection, prayer, and acts of service during Lent.

“Lent is not just about giving something up — it’s about giving back,” said Ms. Izzo. “Our students are living their faith by being of service to others and making the school a more welcoming and kinder place.”

In recent weeks, the Blue Crew has organized a variety of uplifting activities, including:

  • Food drives and participation in a “street retreat”

  • Uplifting notes placed on student lockers

  • Compliments and treats distributed each Friday

  • Support for students in the Intensive Support Program (ISP)

  • Bake sales and games to raise funds for local charities

  • Surprise tokens of appreciation for staff

These efforts align with the Catholic Graduate Expectations and reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ through meaningful action. Students say their goal is to “increase the kindness quotient” in the school community — one small gesture at a time.

The mission behind the campaign is to be the hands, feet, and voice of Christ, while ensuring every member of the school community feels seen, appreciated, and supported.

Staff have praised the students’ leadership and enthusiasm, noting the positive impact throughout the school. With Lent continuing until Easter, the Blue Crew plans to keep the momentum going with more acts of kindness in the weeks ahead.
