Loretto Abbey's Ethics Bowl team—comprised of senior students Simone B., Simone K., and Minnie S.—has earned a coveted spot at the national Ethics Bowl Championship, taking place in Winnipeg at the end of April.
The Ethics Bowl is a unique academic competition that challenges teams from across Canada to develop thoughtful, well-reasoned arguments around ethical dilemmas. Each year, eight complex cases are prepared by university professors and graduate students, then shared with teams in October. Over the following months, students analyze the cases, construct arguments, and participate in virtual exhibition matches, all while promoting respectful and open discourse.
The Loretto Abbey team began their competitive season in early February at the regional bowl held at the University of Toronto's St. George campus. With an undefeated record, they advanced to the provincial finals held at the University of Toronto Mississauga campus on March 22 and 23. Their success continued as they moved into the semi-finals and competed in a virtual playoff round in early April, ultimately securing their place in the national competition.
This year's Ontario competition saw over 120 teams participate—the largest number since the Ethics Bowl’s launch in 2020. Loretto Abbey’s three-member team is among the smallest competing, as most teams consist of 7 to 9 students, making their achievement all the more impressive.
The national finals will take place on April 25 and 26 at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg.
Throughout this long and demanding season, the Loretto Abbey team has demonstrated remarkable dedication, intelligence, and poise. Congratulations to Simone, Simone, and Minnie—your school community is proud of you and wishes you all the best at Nationals!
