The Honourable Jean Augustine Inspires Students During Visit to Loretto Abbey

On February 4, 2025 (Tuesday), students and staff at Loretto Abbey had the distinct honour of welcoming the Honourable Jean Augustine for a special visit that left a lasting impact on all who attended. A trailblazer in Canadian politics and education, Dr. Augustine met with student members of the African Caribbean Association of Students, sharing her wisdom and experiences in an engaging and inspiring discussion.

The visit began with an intimate lunch attended by the students, staff, and Superintendent George Danfulani. This provided a unique opportunity for students to connect with Dr. Augustine on a personal level.

Following the luncheon, Dr. Augustine addressed a larger group of students, captivating the audience with stories from her early life and the challenges she overcame. Born in Grenada, she immigrated to Canada and dedicated her life to public service, becoming the first Black woman elected to the House of Commons. She spoke passionately about her contributions to society, particularly her instrumental role in establishing Black History Month in Canada, ensuring that the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians are recognized and celebrated nationally.

Before her political career, Dr. Augustine had a distinguished tenure in education. She served as a teacher, vice-principal, and principal before becoming a supervisory officer with the then Metropolitan Separate School Board (MSSB), now the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB). Her background in education resonated deeply with students and staff alike, reinforcing the importance of perseverance, leadership, and community engagement.

Students left the event feeling empowered and inspired by Dr. Augustine’s words. The Loretto Abbey community is grateful for Dr. Augustine’s visit and the invaluable lessons she shared. Her legacy of advocacy, education, and social justice continues to inspire students to strive for excellence and make a meaningful difference in society.
