The Loretto Abbey Big Sisters celebrated Christmas this week with a fun-filled afternoon of games and ornament-making. Grade 9 "Little Sisters" enjoyed spending time with their senior "Big Sister" mentors, engaging in lively conversation and crafting holiday decorations.
The Big Sisters program, launched this year, was created by three Grade 12 students—Mercy K., Ava M., and Nicole N.—with the guidance of their teacher leader, Mme. Lena-Rose Burchell. The program was designed to connect Grade 9 students with senior mentors, helping them build a strong foundation for their high school journey. Each mentor-mentee pair was thoughtfully matched based on shared interests, hobbies, and needs. The program, created by students for students, aims to provide support and companionship throughout the high school experience.
With Mme. Burchell’s support, the dream of creating this mentorship program became a reality, and it was officially launched at the start of the school year.
Monthly events are held to foster the connection between "Big Sisters" and "Little Sisters," building lasting relationships within the Loretto Abbey community. So far, students have participated in mentor matching celebrations and a board game afternoon, with many more events planned to strengthen these sisterly bonds.
The Big Sisters program has been a true community effort, with students and mentors working together to ensure each event is a success. Thanks to the dedication of everyone involved, the program continues to create fulfilling memories and reinforce Loretto Abbey’s legacy of sisterhood and family.
