On September 20, 2024 (Friday), Francis Libermann Catholic High School held a unique opening school year Mass with Bishop Vincent Nguyen, the Auxiliary Bishop for the Eastern region of Toronto. The Bishop was so generous to accept our invitation to lead us at the Eucharistic celebration. This was a wonderful way of allowing our students and staff to come together and celebrate their Catholic faith.

Alongside the main celebrant, Bishop Nguyen, were three concelebrants: Fr. Gabriel Ezewudo, CSSp., Fr. Louis Cassidy, CSSp., and Fr. Obinna Ifeanyi, CSSp (our school teacher/co-chaplain). During his homily, the Bishop reflected on the martyrdom of some of his family members, since the day was the memorial day for the Martyrs of Korea - Sts. Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and Companions. They were among the Korean Christians killed for refusing to deny Christ and were canonized by St. Pope John Paul II in 1984. The Bishop’s martyrdom story and reflection helped the staff and students to reflect on their own faith journeys, to understand the depth of the sacrifices expected of Christians, and to remember that God will guide them through this new school year.

Special thanks to Mr. Colin Molloy (school co-chaplain), our principal Mr. Gabe Piccolo, the vice principals, the school choir, altar servers, and all staff and students who took the time to plan, organize, and be a part of this meaningful celebration!
