On February 29, approximately 800 students and guests gathered for the African Canadian Heritage Month Cultural Exposé at St. Mother Teresa Catholic Academy. Our keynote speaker was the Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine, former Principal at St. Dorothy Catholic School and our first Black Member of Parliament, who put forward the motion to recognize Black History Month in February.
The theme of the celebration was "Know History, Know Self". Seven workshops on various topics, as well as performances to celebrate Black History and African Canadian culture, were offered to students. Director Brendan Browne, Associate Director Derek Boyce, former Coordinator of Community Relations Kirk Mark, former principal Dr. Alice Bhyat, Superintendent Roy Fernandes, Superintendent George Danfulani, Superintendent Kimberly Dixon, Superintendent Ryan Peterson, and Trustee for Ward 8 Garry Tanuan were some of the guests who were present to grace the day-long affair.
Our Black History 365 celebration continues throughout the year!
