English as a Second Language (ESL)

The ESL program at St. Mary Catholic Academy is designed to offer communication skills to those students whose first language is not English.

The curriculum is designed to help students develop the skills they need to improve proficiency in everyday English, and most especially, the proficiency in academic English that will allow them to integrate successfully into the mainstream school program.

The criteria used to determine a student’s placement in the program is based on his/her level of competency in listening, speaking, reading, or writing assessed at the Orientation Centre or by the assessment at St. Mary Catholic Academy.
