Students from St. Louis Catholic School’s Gifted Withdrawal Program have demonstrated remarkable ingenuity and technical expertise, earning second place at the Skills Ontario Grade 6 to 7 Regional Competition. The young innovators secured silver in the highly competitive Paper Glider event.

The esteemed competition draws talented participants from across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), challenging them to design and construct functional models using everyday materials. In the paper glider category, students were tasked with engineering an aircraft capable of staying aloft for as long as possible.

Under the mentorship of Ms. McCool, the team spent weeks refining their aerodynamic designs, focusing on minimizing wind resistance to achieve optimal performance. Grade 6 students Jacob S., Kirill P., Erlisa D., and Daniel M. (not pictured) dedicated extensive time to perfecting their gliders, ultimately soaring to a well-earned podium finish.

As they look ahead to the provincial finals in April, the students are determined to enhance their designs and build upon their momentum. "Seeing my students collaborate, think critically, and apply their creativity to this competition has been truly inspiring," said Ms. McCool. "Their dedication and perseverance have led to this incredible achievement, and I have no doubt they’ll continue to shine at the provincial level."

This outstanding accomplishment not only highlights the students’ talent and determination, but also underscores the value of STEM-based learning. With access to the right resources and opportunities, young innovators continue to push boundaries and achieve extraordinary results.

The entire St. Louis Catholic School community is rallying behind these students as they prepare to compete at the provincial level!
