It is our pleasure to announce that our Grade 12 student, Niccolo B. ( who was also a former math contest winner) has become our 2024 school champion in the University of Waterloo's Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) math contest! Niccolo received a Medal as well as a Certificate of Distinction from the University of Waterloo. His score was 38, which is above the announced certificate cut off average of 36 and the medal cut off average of 30. The overall mean was 30.7 for the 16,425 participants. 4 out of 5 of our school participants also received a score on or above the announced mean.
On February 26, 2025 (Wednesday), SJOA students from Grades 9, 10 and 11 also competed in the Canadian Senior and Intermediate Mathematics Contests (CSMC and CIMC), which provide challenging math problems for students to enjoy and enhance their problem-solving skills using a mix of short answer and full solution questions. Participating in the mathematics contests helps participants to:
Discover and grow a love of mathematics and computing.
Foster creative problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
Learn about new concepts to make connections across topics in mathematics and computing.
Since CEMC contests are challenging yet achievable activities for young learners, they also build a student's confidence in their ability to tackle difficult problems—a key ingredient for student success both inside and outside the classroom.
Congratulations to our students who participated in this challenging contest, and thank you to Mr. Raymond Sarkissian, our Mathematics Department Head at SJOA, for his dedication in providing this valuable opportunity for our emerging mathematicians!
