Recently, students from the Grade 9 de-streamed English class at St. Basil-the-Great College School were involved in an innovative initiative providing students with the opportunity to create over 120 canvas paintings that reflect the theme of identity, using an arts-based approach to express the students’ individual perspectives. To facilitate this equity-based assessment, teaching staff employed differentiated instruction and Universal Design for Learning strategies.
The students showcased their remarkable creations through an exhibit and welcomed all classes to visit and view the paintings. The objective of the initiative is not only to highlight the talents of the de-streamed students, but also to foster a sense of community and inclusivity within the St. Basil-the-Great school community.
Additionally, this project was a cross-curricular initiative, involving the dedicated Intensive Support Program (ISP) students and staff who contributed to the event by serving hot chocolate to all the visiting classes, adding a warm and inviting atmosphere to the exhibit.
The school community is especially grateful to Ms. Rizzardo Freitas and her ISP students for their support. A special thanks also goes out to the Grade 9 English teachers, Ms. Nigro-Perrotta, Ms. Terceros, and Ms. Lee-Tobin, whose dedication and innovative teaching methods made this exhibit possible.
