The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) Central Guidance team, in partnership with Humber College, provided Grade 10 Career Studies and Grade 11 Designing Your Future classes from Chaminade College School the opportunity to experience college for the day on May 16, 2024.
Students toured the Humber Centre for Trades & Technology and explored first hand the opportunities available in the skilled trades and apprenticeship pathway. Students engaged in various hands-on workshops which included; plumbing, electrical and carpentry. In the workshops, students learned how to cut and crimp PEX pipe to construct their own hula hoop. They also were able to familiarize themselves with basic series and parallel circuits and tested their knowledge on simple circuits. Finally, each student was able to try out basic hand and power tools in building a birdhouse out of wood.
Students also had the opportunity to listen to the experiences of a Grade 12 Chaminade College School student who is currently enrolled in the Accelerated OYAP Program and working toward completing the Level 1 portion of the apprenticeship training for an Electrician.
Students were inspired with new perspectives after participating in stimulating learning experiences that went beyond the traditional classroom to help them explore career options. A special thank you to the Administration and Guidance Department at Chaminade College School for their support and collaboration in making the day possible.
