Cristiano Da S. is a student from Chaminade College School who is passionate about using science and engineering to tackle important environmental issues.
After being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, Cristiano was frustrated with the unnecessary plastic waste produced during diabetes treatment. He was especially concerned with continuous glucose monitor (CGM) applicators, a costly yet necessary device that is thrown out every ten days and cannot be recycled. To reduce the environmental impact of diabetes treatment, he designed a prototype of a reusable CGM applicator.
Last month, Cristiano’s project was awarded a gold medal from the Toronto Science Fair held at the University of Toronto Scarborough. For his work, he was also previously selected for the Rise Global Winner scholarship from the Rhodes Trust, and will present his project at the University of Oxford this summer as part of the program.
Congratulations, Cristiano!
