On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, the St. Joseph's College School Alumni Association hosted its inaugural SJCS Alumni Career Day: Igniting Your Potential. Over 60 alumni returned to the school in the spirit of the alumni association's motto: "Embracing the past, empowering the future."
The alumni organized a full day of programming for all students. The opening assembly began with keynote speakers who emphasized the importance of "skill stacking" and featured a panel of alumni from various industries who answered career-based questions submitted by students. Students then attended two morning speaker sessions to learn about different career pathways. The entire school participated in a networking lunch, during which students practiced approaching alumni for support. After lunch, students joined the SJCS Alumni Professional Skills Workshop, which focused on interview skills. Throughout the day, students carried folders with drafts of their resumes and had the opportunity to ask alumni for feedback. The day ended with an assembly celebrating the community, where prizes donated by local businesses and parents were awarded to students who showed initiative during the sessions.
While the day centered on career development, the greater lesson alumni imparted to students was that of servant leadership. Students appreciated that these women had taken time off work to help them build skills and develop their confidence. Congregavit nos in unum Christi Amour.
"I appreciated how the speakers were giving us feedback and important tips for high school. They gave their time to talk to us and encouraged us not to worry, reminding us that there are so many possible jobs. You’re going to find one if you try your best and persevere through it all." — E. Klemente, Grade 9
