St. Bonaventure Catholic School wrapped up a week-long celebration of Quebec’s famous Carnaval de Quebec during the last week of February, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere for students. From spirit wear days to a truly unique "Cabane à Sucre" experience, the school’s French as a Second Language (FSL) Department ensured every moment was filled with fun, learning, and cultural celebration.
The festivities kicked off with daily spirit wear days, encouraging students to show their school pride in creative and colorful outfits. The fun continued each day over the school’s announcements with rounds of SALUT, a French Bingo game, where students could win exciting prizes.
School staff also organized a play day and an outdoor dance party, along with a movie day, where students enjoyed films in French to continue their immersion in the language and culture.
The highlight of the week, however, was the "Cabane à Sucre" experience, a new addition to the school’s Carnaval de Quebec celebrations. In partnership with Sixty Six Brix, a gourmet maple taffy business, the students had the chance to enjoy the authentic Quebecois tradition of maple taffy. Using 100% pure Ontario maple syrup, Sixty Six Brix expertly prepared the sweet treat, pouring it onto food-grade snow and rolling it on-site to create a fresh, delicious experience. The maple taffy was beautifully presented on live-edge maple wood slabs, giving the dessert station an elegant twist on the traditional sugar shack experience.
Grade 7 students added to the celebration by taking part in traditional French dancing, demonstrated their musical talent with spoon-playing, and served food such as maple beans (les fèves à l’érable), all while showcasing their artistic creations for the event.
The weeklong celebration not only helped students connect with the traditions of Quebec, but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the French language and culture, making Carnaval de Quebec at St. Bonaventure Catholic School a truly memorable event.
