The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) Elementary School Hockey Program recently celebrated our 50th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in the history of youth sports in the community. Mr. Bria, Superintendent of Education for Area 2, played a role in the festivities, having the honor of dropping the puck for each final game. He joined the players in celebration, and the event was made even more special by a visit from Mr. Della Mora.
For the past 50 years, the program has provided boys and girls in Grades 6, 7, and 8 with the opportunity to play hockey for their school. Originally, games were played outdoors on rinks during the cold months of January and February, with the City Finals held at the legendary Maple Leaf Gardens. Many who participated in those early days still fondly remember the excitement of the games, the thrill of cheering crowds, and the unforgettable chance to play in such an iconic venue.
While the program has evolved over the years, the spirit of the event remains the same. It continues to be a celebration of community and a special opportunity for students to play alongside older family members, friends, and classmates.
Congratulations to this year's winners:
Pool A: St. John won the City Finals against Our Lady of Sorrow.
Pool B: Father Serra won against Our Lady of Peace.
Pool C: Blessed Sacrament won against St. Denis.
Pool D: Our Lady of Fatima won against St. Conrad.
