In April 2025, excitement filled the gymnasium at James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School as our school proudly hosted our official High Performance Athletics (HPA) Signing Day for incoming Grade 9 students entering the 2025-2026 academic year. This celebratory event marked a significant milestone for young student-athletes and their families as they formally committed to joining one of the Toronto Catholic District School Board's (TCDSB) premier athletic development programs.
Parents, future students, coaches, and staff gathered to witness and support the next generation of high-performing athletes as they signed their official HPA commitment papers, symbolizing their dedication to both athletic excellence and academic achievement. The event highlighted the school’s ongoing commitment to fostering talent, discipline, and leadership among student-athletes.
"We are incredibly proud of these young individuals for choosing the path of commitment, growth, and excellence," said Mr. Tony Bisceglia, Principal of James Cardinal McGuigan. "Our HPA program is designed to nurture the physical, mental, and academic development of student-athletes, preparing them for success both on and off the field."
The Signing Day ceremony included remarks from school leadership, HPA coaches, and current senior athletes, who shared their experiences and offered words of encouragement to the incoming students. Following the speeches, each student-athlete was called up to the stage, where they officially signed their commitment forms in front of proud family members and future teammates.
The High Performance Athletics (HPA) Program at James Cardinal McGuigan offers specialized training, academic support, and personalized development plans for students striving to compete at the highest levels of sport. From enhanced athletic scheduling to integrated strength and conditioning sessions, the HPA program is recognized for producing well-rounded student-athletes ready for post-secondary competition and beyond.
"This is more than just signing a piece of paper," said Coach Nick Vescio, HPA Program Coordinator. "It’s about choosing to push limits, represent your school with pride, and become a leader in your sport and your community."
The event concluded with a photos of the 2025-2026 HPA cohort, capturing a moment that marks the beginning of their high school journey as elite student-athletes.
As James Cardinal McGuigan continues to grow its reputation as a hub for high-level athletic and academic development, the HPA Signing Day stands as a proud tradition—welcoming a new class of students ready to rise to the challenge and chase their dreams.
